Peroutka: Gonzales Unfit as Attorney General

Pasadena, Md.— Michael A. Peroutka, who was the 2004 Constitution Party presidential candidate, has issued the following statement regarding the proposed appointment of former White House counsel Alberto Gonzales as the next attorney general of the United States:
“As the former owner of a Major League Baseball team, there is no doubt that President Bush is familiar with the phrase, ‘Three strikes and you’re out.’ Sadly for the conservatives, it appears the president is determined to strike out in the first week since his re-election.
“Pro-life conservatives voted Bush back into office with the belief that he would take real and lasting action to end the national disgrace of abortion. Yet his administration continues to defend the pro-abortion Arlen Specter in the face of comments that as chairman of the Judiciary Committee he would not support pro-life nominees. Strike two came with the president’s renewed and vigorous efforts to push a so-called ‘guest worker’ program for illegal immigrants. Now, President Bush has nominated Alberto Gonzales to be attorney general, the head of the Department of Justice and chief law enforcement officer of the federal government. Gonzales, like Specter, is no friend to the pro-life movement. As a Supreme Court judge in Texas, he was instrumental in a court decision that ignored a parental notification law to allow a teenage girl to receive an abortion without her parents’ knowledge.
“When asked directly in an L.A. Times interview about abortion and judicial nominees, Gonzales said that a judge’s job is to ‘uphold a statute that you may find personally offensive.’ With all due respect, the death of 3,500 children per day in the United States is not a matter of personal offense—it is unmitigated homicide. Gonzales has not demonstrated an understanding of the American view of law and government that our country requires. This is not a person who is fit to be attorney general.
“With Specter poised to take over the Judiciary Committee and Gonzales set to be our next attorney general, conservatives must ask themselves if this is what they voted for. Those who want to see an end to abortion in their lifetime must make their voices heard and tell this administration that Gonzales and Specter are not acceptable. I will continue to do everything in my power in the coming months to stand for God, family and the Republic by working to ensure that the Bush Administration fulfills its commitments to conservatives.”
